“We have noticed there is paving everywhere and construction,” Calgary driver Tiawni Croteau said. “We were actually in Edmonton a couple of weeks ago and it wasn’t as bad as it is right now in Calgary.”

The paving projects are spread across the city in all four quadrants. Some have started, but most will begin in August.

“We are doing about twice the number of capital projects; 164 lane kilometres, over 80,000 tonnes of asphalt,” city roads spokesperson Christopher McGeachy said. “We are doing 12 large-scale projects when we would normally do six or seven projects in each year.”

There is a parking ban in effect on streets being paved. If drivers leave vehicles there, the city will tag and tow them. Crews will try and drop off vehicles at nearby roads if there’s an open space. If not, vehicles will be taken to the city impound lot. The city will pay the tow charge but drivers will have to pay the parking ticket and impound lot fees.

The city says paving operations are weather-dependent and unexpected delays can occur, so be prepared to adjust driving times and patterns at least for the rest of the summer. The city says some of the projects could last into mid-September.

Drivers should be aware of these projects and take appropriate alternate routes for the next month or so.
