Last week’s Republican National Convention (RNC) was a charged event, from the partly plagiarized speech of presidential hopeful Donald Trump‘s wife Melania to the booing of one-time candidate Ted Cruz.
TV viewers around the world watched as Republicans rallied around Trump, who was flanked by dozens of American flags as he spewed vitriol to a rapt audience.

On Sunday, Last Week Tonight host John Oliver, known for perfectly (and hilariously) summarizing even the most convoluted events, helped explain the RNC and Trump in terms even political novices could understand. Oliver pointed out that most of the numbers and statistics Trump used were incorrect.

In his speech, Trump said that “corruption has reached a level like never, ever before in our country,” and that “180,000 illegal immigrants with criminal records ordered deported from our country are tonight roaming free to threaten peaceful citizens.”

Oliver countered, saying “It is worth noting that since President Obama took office, crime rates, the flow of illegal immigrants over our borders, and claims for unemployment benefits have all declined.”
