School’s out and the Fraser Institute has sent out its annual report card on Alberta high schools.
The annual report card is way for parents to compare the academic performance of their children’s schools.
The report card this year rates 307 public, private, separate and charter schools based on five academic indicators from Grade 12 province-wide testing and graduation rates.
The Fraser Institute said that this report card gives parents the ability to compare school performance to help them make a more informed decision about the schools their kids attend.
Critics of the Fraser report say there are many other factors that make up a good school that aren’t reflected in the review, like student engagement, extra curricular activities, and a school’s focus on creativity and innovation.
Also, the schools that do tend to rank highly have a higher proportion of gifted students and a higher number of parents with a university education.
This year’s report card shows that eight out of the top 10 high schools in Alberta are in the Calgary area.
The top ones are Webber, Rundle, West Island College, Strathcona Tweedsmuir, Bearspaw Christian, Western Canada and Westmount Charter.
Bishop Carroll High School was the top Catholic school in Calgary.
Other Calgary public schools that made the top 30 are Sir Winston Churchill and William Aberhart.
