Rio 2016: Team Canada announces 8-member Olympic beach volleyball team

TORONTO – Canada will send eight beach volleyball players to the Rio Olympics.

Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., and Heather Bansley of Waterdown, Ont., will form one team, and Victoria’ Jamie Broder and Toronto’s Kristina Valjas will also team up in the women’s draw.

On the men’s side it will be Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., and Calgary’s Ben Saxton, and Richmond Hill, Ont., duo Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter.

It’s the first time Canada has qualified a full quota of two teams per gender since the sport was added to the Olympic program in 1996.

The beach volleyball competition will be held on Rio’s famous Copacabana Beach.
