Asbestos at Mendel building delays renovations for Children’s Discovery Museum

The Children’s Discovery Museum is facing a delay after asbestos was found at the old Mendel building, which is the future site of the museum.

A report presented to a city committee on Monday said that asbestos removal will take about five months, and cost an extra $700,000.

That will push the total cost of renovations to about $9.6 million.

The museum is raising $3-million on its own and has applied for federal funding through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund for the remainder.

The museum is now expected to open in the fall of 2018.
