SASKATOON – There has been a big unveiling for the new and improved Children’s Discovery Museum in Saskatoon. Officials released the museum’s master plan on Wednesday, showing how the Mendel building will be re purposed.

The museum will include nine exhibit areas, a northern lights structure at the entrance and a subterranean area for children to explore mining and geology.

“When the museum designers do this kind of work, they look at what are the kids going to be learning here,” said Dave Hunchak, president of the Children’s Discovery Museum.

“Is it problem solving? Is it group work? Is it communication? Is it spatial awareness?”

The final version came about after three potential concepts were released in February for public feedback. From there, the designers incorporated popular ideas from the feedback they received.

The new location at the Mendel Art Gallery will be six times the size of the museum’s current location at Market Mall.

Officials say they will be able to host 60,000 children every year in the new location, which is expected to open in 2017 at a cost of $10-million.
