A 35-year-old Guelph, Ont., man has been charged after police say he was caught driving with a headlamp in place of headlights on a dark stretch of road.

Guelph police were using radar to track speeding vehicles on Gordon Street, near the Springfield Gold Course, just after 10 p.m. Monday.

The road has a 70 km/h speed limit, no artificial lighting and police said it is “in total darkness in the absence of traffic.”

A police officer saw what was believed to be a bicycle light heading northbound, but as it got closer it turned out to be a car travelling at a high rate of speed.

Police said the vehicle was clocked travelling 108 km/h and as it passed the officer it had no working headlights or tail lights.
