Smoking material was the cause of a mattress fire that forced the evacuation of a Saskatoon apartment building on Monday.

Firefighters were called to 439 5th Ave. N. just before 6 p.m. CT after an alarm company called stating they were receiving a fire signal at the building.

Crews arrived to find people outside the building and alarm bells ringing.

The fire was traced to a suite on the second floor, where there was a small fire in a mattress.

It took firefighters 10 minutes to put out the smoldering fire using a pressurized water pump tank.

Fans were then placed to ventilate smoke from the apartment.

A Saskatoon Fire Department investigator determined the cause of the fire to be unattended smoking material that had been left on a window ledge that was blown onto the bed by a wind gust.

Damage is estimated at $5,000.
