MONTREAL – Two men are in critical condition following a head-on collision on Highway 221 in Saint-Cyprien-de-Napierville in the Montérégie.

According to Sgt. Claude Denis, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec, the crash happened shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday.

Denis said two vehicles were involved in the crash — a grey car heading south and red car going north.

It is unclear how the the collision happened.

Denis said police are investigating different scenarios: “Did one car go over the line? Was there a distraction?”

Both cars were driven by men and both had a female occupant.

The driver of the grey car is believed to be in his mid-30s. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition. The female passenger, in her mid-20s, is in stable but serious condition.

The couple in the red car, both in their 60s, were also taken to hospital for treatment. The man is in critical condition and the woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are asking motorists to avoid the area, as investigators do their work.
