Production underway in Toronto on TV series ‘Beauty and the Beast’

TORONTO – Canadian actress Kristin Kreuk was filming scenes for the new series Beauty and the Beast on a downtown Toronto street Thursday afternoon.

The 29-year-old former Smallville star plays NYPD homicide detective Catherine Chandler in the re-imagination of a tale as old as time.

Kreuk and co-star Nina Lisandrello did several takes of a scene in which they are looking for clues on a car with a smashed windshield before chasing a suspect down an alleyway.

Toronto is standing in for New York City in the drama, which debuts on Showcase on Oct. 11 at 9pm. (The show will air south of the border on The CW.)

This modern version of Beauty and the Beast starts with a flashback to the night Catherine saw her mother getting shot to death. She’s saved by a man-like beast who comes out of nowhere and brutally kills the gunmen. Years later, the same shadowy creature saves her life again on a subway platform.

Catherine discovers her hero is scientist Dr. Vincent Keller, played by Jay Ryan, who is hiding out in an abandoned building trying to find a cure for an affliction that turns him into a beast whenever he’s angry.

Convinced that her mother’s murder was not random, Catherine agrees to let Vincent remain hidden away from society if he helps her solve the case.

“We really wanted to make sure that it didn’t come across that Catherine would get saved all the time by the Beast, and that that would be the show,” Kreuk told Access Hollywood in July. “That’s not the show – it’s really about a partnership between the two of them.”

Production of season one of Beauty and the Beast is scheduled to continue in Toronto until Dec. 20.
