Screenwriter Randall Wallace, the man who wrote Braveheart, revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that actor/director Mel Gibson is planning a sequel to 2004’s The Passion of the Christ.
Wallace has started writing the script for the upcoming film, which is reportedly going to focus on the resurrection of Jesus. The Oscar-nominated screenwriter reluctantly divulged the information to THR after admitting the project was becoming too difficult to keep secret.

Wallace, who was nominated for an Oscar for his Braveheart script, was a major in religious education at Duke University and says he specialized in Jesus’ resurrection.
“I always wanted to tell this story,” he said. “The Passion is the beginning and there’s a lot more story to tell.”
The Passion of the Christ is the most successful independent film of all time, earning an astonishing $612 million worldwide on a $30-million production budget.
The appetite for more has not quelled over time, and apparently there was demand within the Christian community for a follow-up to The Passion.

“The evangelical community considers The Passion the biggest movie ever out of Hollywood, and they kept telling us that they think a sequel will be even bigger,” said Wallace.
The Passion had more pre-ticket sales than any other movie in history, until it was recently beaten by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015.
Gibson has remained mum about the project.
