UPDATE: IHIT is asking the public’s help in identifying a vehicle of interest in the investigation of the shooting of Amarjit Singh Sandhu on June 4. If anyone has information about the homicide or vehicle, please contact IHIT or CrimeStoppers.
The victim of a daylight shooting outside a Richmond strip mall Saturday evening has been identified as local developer 56-year-old Amarjit Singh Sandhu, and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Unit believes the shooting was targeted.
The attack took place at Ironwood Plaza on the 11300 block of Steveston Highway around 6 p.m. Police say Sandhu was alive at the scene and transported to hospital, but later died from his injuries. One vehicle present at the site, a black Nissan truck, was peppered with bullet holes.
Sandhu was an active member of Vancouver’s Sikh Youth Movement. He had launched a Legal battle against leaders of the Ross Street Sikh Temple, and was successful in forcing a new election.
“He is the backbone of the opposition. He spent a lot of money, more than 100,000 of his own pocket to fight against us. I wouldn’t do it, said Ranjit Hayer, the Senior VP Khalsa Diwan Society.

Witnesses say Sandhu was at the temple just an hour before his murder, but don’t believe his death was linked to his politics.
“He was a nice guy, I’m not against him personally, we have political differences, so I was shocked when I heard,” Hayer says.
“The act of homicide is one that is selfish and cold. There is an extra element of concern when one chooses to commit this crime in such a bold and brazen manner in a very public setting. Fortunately, no other individuals were injured,” said IHIT Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound.
The suspect is described as being a male in his early to mid-20s, approximately six feet tall with a slender or slim build and was wearing a grey or light grey coloured hoodie or coat, medium to dark coloured pants and possibly a baseball cap.
Police will remain at the scene on Sunday to continue their investigation and speak with the many witnesses in the area.
