The city has opened up it’s first dog park in downtown Calgary.
The Calgary Parks Department said Thursday it heard from residents that dogs were being under-serviced in the area.
“There are almost 650 dogs licensed in the Beltline, and during public engagement we identified a need for a safe and dedicated off-leash space in the area,” Doug Marter, development manager for Calgary Parks, said.

The new park is located in Connaught at 11 Street and 14 Avenue S.W. and is a part of a bigger multi-purpose park.
The fenced-in, off-leash area is about the size of a hockey rink, and dogs and their owners have new water fountains to enjoy.
The design was inspired by other urban off-leash areas in cities like New York and Chicago.
