Global News picks up 18 RTDNA nominations

Global News has been nominated for 18 RTDNA awards. RTDNA awards

Global News’ coverage of the 2015 Federal Election, data analysis of the Ashley Madison security breach, and investigation into the readiness of RCMP officers are among the network’s news coverage nominated for a total 18 RTDNA Network awards,

RTDNA Canada, the Association of Electronic Journalists, honours the best journalists, programs, stations and newsgathering organizations in radio, television and digital annually. According to RTDNA president Ian Koenigsfest, the network awards “highlight the depth and scope of outstanding storytelling in Canada.”

GlobalNews.ca received two nominations for coverage of the 2015 Federal Election, as well as a nomination for the Digital Media Award.

Globalnews.ca also picked up two Data Storytelling Award nominations, one for coverage of the Ashley Madison security breach and another regarding access to Canada’s abortion clinics. The story investigates how your chances of getting an abortion — and the distance you’ll travel, the amount you’ll pay, the number of medical professionals whose approval you’ll need and the degree of pushback you’ll get from people judging your decision — vary widely depending on where you live in Canada.

Global News’ 16×9 has been nominated for five awards, including a nomination for the Dave Rogers Awards for Long Feature (TV) for its investigation into The Wives of ISIS.  The story reveals the young women and girls who are being lured by ISIS recruiters, including pockets of underage teens here in Canada who have left, tried to leave, or are hoping to leave Canada to join ISIS. The Wives of ISIS was also nominated at the New York Festivals awards.

16×9 received a nomination for the  Dan McArthur Award for Under Fire, an explosive investigation into the Moncton RCMP shootings and whether officers were ready for the call.

The RCMP pleaded not guilty to four Labour Code charges stemming from the June 2014 shooting rampage last week.  The charges followed an investigation into whether the Mounties had the proper equipment and training to deal with active shooter situations.

16×9 was also nominated for the Adrienne Clarkson award for Diversity (TV) for The Fight for Trans Rights, an investigation into the life and death struggle of transgendered women and men in North America.

Global National with Dawna Friesen earned nominations in six categories, including Best Newscast – TV, for its special team coverage of the Paris attacks.

Global National offered Canadian viewers a sense of the resilience found on the streets of the French capital, while providing the latest details on the investigation, the manhunt for the suspects and the personal stories of the victims.

Global National’s coverage of the Paris attacks is also up for the Ron Laidlaw award for Continuing Coverage – TV, as is Global National’s ongoing reporting from the front lines of the refugee crisis.

Dawna Friesen’s one-on-one interview with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Because it’s 2015: In Conversation with the Prime Minister, is up for the Gord Sinclair Award –Live Special Events TV.  The interview is nominated alongside Global News’ Decision Canada: 2015 Election coverage.

Global National also received nominations for the Charlie Edwards Award of Spot News for reporting on the Germanwings plane crash, the Hugh Haugland Award for Creative Use of Video and the Dave Rogers Award for Short Feature – TV.
