WINNIPEG — Greenhouses saw a surge of customers last week when the weather warmed up, but now gardeners will need to protect their plants as temperatures are expected to drop below zero on Friday.

“We probably had our busiest Mother’s Day ever,” Mary Ann Sumka, manager of  Sumka Brothers Greenhouses said.

The heatwave had many Winnipeggers inspired to start their summer gardens but it may have been a bit too early.

“If you have plants that are outside you should cover them with a blanket or a sheet or a sheet or burlap,” Sumka said.

Temperatures are expected to drop below the freezing mark Friday. Sumka also recommends bringing sensitive plants indoors.
