5 Mother’s Day events in the Lower Mainland under $20

Laurenne Schiller - Stanley Park.

For those who can’t throw down big bucks on a Mother’s Day luncheon and spa, there are tons of creative activities around the Lower Mainland this weekend.

Here are five outdoor and cultural activities that generally cost $10 or less per person.

  1. Farmers’ markets

This Sunday is the kick-off day for several farmers’ markets, including locations in Vancouver, Coquitlam and Steveston.

Each market is unique and they often have extra activities set up on site such as face-painting, gardening experts available to answer questions or musicians performing live. Aside from the amazing local  produce available, there are usually fresh-baked goodies and food trucks on site. Of course, you could also take a blanket and picnic on the nearby grass. You’ll also want to check the market hours before heading out as most markets close in the early afternoon.

  1. Stanley Park

The guided ecological activities and feminist walking tours of Stanley Park might make the 400 hectare park less daunting. The Stanley Park Ecological Society, in partnership with Science World and other organizations, will be hosting a free Mother’s Day Bio-blitz. There will be activity tables, presentations about wildlife and a birding tour where participants are challenged to identify as many of the park’s different bird species as possible. Pre-registration is required and the event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Also in Stanley Park this weekend, you can take a tour of the “famous and forgotten” women of Stanley Park. Rare historical photographs will help bring the tour stops to life as participants learn about different women who have lived in and used the park in decades past.

The tour costs $10 per person, and the guides accept cash only. Meet at the Lost Lagoon viewing plaza overlooking the lagoon, at the foot of Alberni Street, at Chilco St.

  1. Artist’s open studio

If you love art, miniature sculptures and candy, Rhonda Weppler’s Mother’s Day open studio is the place to be. Attendees get a behind-the-scenes look at Weppler’s art techniques and the opportuity to create their own mini food sculpture using candy (while supplies last). Weppler has been involved in several public art projects around Metro Vancouver and is the artist in residence at Richmond’s Branscombe House.

4. Yoga class

For a relaxing Mother’s Day experience head on over to YYoga. From Friday through Sunday they’re offering one free class to all moms (women who are expecting are included). They have several locations in Metro Vancouver and this deal is valid at all of them. Regular drop-in classes cost $20, so if you take your mom who gets in free, then it’s $20 total for the two of you. Or better yet, get mom and grandma to go together and the whole shebang is free!

If YYoga is too far to travel, ask about yoga or fitness classes at your local community centre. Many recreation centres offer low-priced group classes, some of which are open to drop-ins.

5. South Surrey Mother’s Day party

Imagine sitting back with a cup of tea, and listening to live string music while surrounded by a botanical garden. While this sounds like a British high tea event that might cost $50, the entry fee to the South Surrey Glades Park Mother’s Day party is only $7 per person. Hot chocolate and tea cost extra and there’s also a plant sale on site. Kids under 12 are free and the event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cash only.
