The mother of a 4-year-old girl is facing child abandonment charges after the toddler was found wandering the streets of Toronto alone early Monday morning.

Police were notified after a neighbour spotted the girl walking by herself around 1:30 a.m. in the St. Clair West Village area near Oakwood Avenue and St. Clair Avenue West.

Officers were able to confirm the child’s home address after speaking with the landlord where she lived.

Police say the girl’s mother was out getting pizza and had left the child alone in the family’s basement apartment on Conway Avenue.

Officers arrived on location and found the front door open.

Authorities say the parents were not home at the time but both the mother and father were later tracked down.

The child also had a six-year-old brother but he was with his grandparents in Hamilton, police say.

No charges have been laid against the father as he was at work at the time.
