MONTREAL – A 53-year-old man is dead following an intervention by Montreal police (SPVM) early Sunday morning in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.
At 5:15 a.m. police officers with the SPVM intervened after they saw a man crossing Sherbrooke Street East against a red light at the intersection of Bossuet Street.
Officers handcuffed the man, who appeared heavily intoxicated and was being uncooperative.
According to Sgt. Claude Denis with the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), the man then went into cardiac arrest.
Officers attempted to revive the man. The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition where he later died.
The investigation was handed over to the SQ by Quebec’s Public Security Ministry, as per protocol.
An independent investigation is launched whenever a person dies or is injured during a police intervention.
