EDMONTON – S. Bruce Smith School in west Edmonton was put on lockdown and the surrounding area blocked Monday as police investigated a suspicious package.

At around 3 p.m., police said the area around 184 Street and 57 Avenue was closed to traffic and asked drivers to avoid the area.

Just after 3:30 p.m., police said the call was finished and the area reopened.

A police spokesperson explained the suspicious package was an improvised explosive device, but said it didn’t pose a safety risk.

The package was rendered safe by the police bomb technicians. Investigators will look into how it arrived at the school.

More to come…
