CALGARY – Some drivers who suffered tire and rim damage on Glenmore Trail say they will be sending the repair bill to the City of Calgary.

They say they were travelling east on Glenmore when they hit some metal on the road surface east of Blackfoot Trail. It caused major slowdowns during their Wednesday morning commute and some hefty repair bills.

“My bill is about $1,200” Rick Malyszka said.

He was driving to work when the incident happened to him and other drivers.

“There were approximately 15 cars pulled over to the side – varying amounts of damage. My car had two tires blown out, two rims taken out, plus some minor body damage. Other vehicles – there was an SUV with the bumper torn right off.”

The City of Calgary said the problems were caused by an upheaval in an expansion joint in a bridge section over top of 11 Street S.E.

“In the span of about an hour-and-a-half we had that bridge fixed. We poured some concrete on the joint and it’s good to go,” Sean Somers, a city spokesperson, said.

Somers said that bridge section is more than 30 years old and is scheduled to be removed next year.
