A local MP wants people to stop being afraid of calling 9-1-1 when they are with someone who has overdosed on drugs.
MP Ron McKinnon, who represents Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam, is now taking action by proposing the ‘Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act’.
The act would give people immunity from prosecution for drug possession and it is hoped it will lead to more 9-1-1 calls during overdoses, even if the caller has been using drugs.
It is being endorsed by the Canadian Medical Association.
If passed, the act would be the first in Canada.
