WINNIPEG – It’s only February but the hockey season is already over for the University of Manitoba Bisons men’s hockey team. The Herd were eliminated with a 6-1 loss to the Calgary Dinos in the deciding game three of the Canada West quarterfinal series on Sunday at the University of Manitoba’s Wayne Fleming Arena.
Penalties proved costly for Manitoba who spent nearly 10 minutes shorthanded. The Dinos capitilized with three powerplay goals.
Spencer Edwards notched two goals in the win for Calgary while Cain Franson had three assists. The Dinos outshot the Bisons 36-24.
“Calgary is a very good, experienced playoff team,” Bisons head coach Mike Sirant said through a media release. “We’re a very young team but all of our guys are eligible to come back next year, no one else in the league can say that.”

The Herd won game one on Friday and then suffered a 2-1 loss in game two on Saturday to set up the winner take all match-up. The Dinos scored a pair of first period goals to jump on top early. Bisons forward Justin Augert scored the only goal of the second period to close the gap to one. But the Dinos scored two quick goals in the first three minutes of the third period and then added two more for a convincing 6-1 triumph. Bisons goalie Justin Paulic made 30 saves in the loss.
Calgary has now won three of their last five playoff series with the Herd’s last playoff win coming in the 2004-05 season. Manitoba won all four of their regular season meetings in conference play this season.
The Dinos will face the Saskatchewan Huskies in the Canada West semifinal starting on Friday.
The Bisons women’s team is also facing elimination as they will tangle with the Saskatchewan Huskies in the do or die game three on Sunday night.
