Council believes removing the Couplet could improve the business district and add a sense of community in the downtown Westbank Centre.

In 2013, the council of the day abandoned plans to remove the Couplet after receiving an estimate from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure that the project would cost $41 million.

Now there is renewed interest in moving the highway away from the downtown core, most likely realigning it north of the current right of way.
