EDMONTON – A 29-year-old woman was airlifted to hospital in Edmonton Thursday evening after she was struck by an SUV along the QEII Highway.

RCMP say Ponoka officers were initially called out to a report of a possible impaired driver heading south on the busy highway. While responding to this call, another call came in reporting a vehicle with the same description had lost control and went off the highway about three kilometres north of Blackfalds.

RCMP say the woman driving the vehicle got out and ran onto the highway where she was struck by a southbound SUV.

The woman, who RCMP say is from Morinville, was taken to hospital in Edmonton where she remains in critical condition.

The driver of the SUV and three passengers were not injured.

The investigation is ongoing. At this point there is no word on whether charges will be laid.
