Long weekend begins with travel hiccups

The May long weekend is often fraught with transportation issues.

BC Ferries had to take the Queen of New Westminster out of commision on Friday, and traffic at major border crossings south of Vancouver has been steady, with lineups expected to peak later in the weekend.

Even the local campgrounds are jammed as many people planned ahead.

Campers should be ready for rain or shine however, as showers and heavier clouds are forecast for much of B.C. starting Sunday.

It wouldn’t be a long weekend without at least one travel hiccup.

“Well we did have some overloads, probably earlier than we normally would have on a long weekend,” said Deborah Marshall of BC Ferries. “We did see minor overloads at the Tsawwassen terminal, and about 150 car overload out of the Swartz Bay terminal.”

As for the borders, officials said Friday would be a better time to cross, as it’s only going to get busier.

“We’re expecting it to get quite busy on Sunday and Monday,” said Erin Steeksma with the Canada Border Services Agency. “Monday is traditionally our busiest day. If travellers can come back to Canada before 6 p.m. that would be better as we expect volumes to increase quite substantially from around 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.”
