Oilers roll dice on troubled Kassian; send Scrivens to Canadiens

EDMONTON – The Edmonton Oilers have acquired forward Zack Kassian from the Montreal Canadiens for goalie Ben Scrivens.

Kassian was suspended without pay at the start of the season after he was involved in a collision that left him with a broken nose and broken foot.

Reports said Kassian was not driving the vehicle, which crashed into a tree Sunday morning at about 6 a.m.

There were two women, one of them the driver, in the vehicle at the time.

The 24-year-old was placed in Stage Two of the NHL and NHLPA’s Substance Abuse and Behavioural Health Program.

He was cleared to play earlier in December after completing the program.

The NHL and the NHL Players’ Association announced that Kassian “has been returned to available status and has entered the follow-up care phase of the substance abuse and behavioural health program.”

The Canadiens then placed Kassian on waivers.

Kassian has 66 points in 198 career NHL games and 307 penalty minutes.

He was selected 13th overall in 2009 NHL Draft by the Bufallo Sabres.

Scrivens has spent the season in the American Hockey League playing for the Bakersfield Condors, where he’s posted a 2-6-1 record with a 3.47 goals-against average and a .893 save percentage.

He’s appeared in 129 career NHL games, recording a 42-56-17 record with seven shutouts, a 2.90 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage.
