CALGARY – A rash of collisions between vehicles and CTrains has prompted a warning from Calgary police and Calgary Transit.
There were four crashes involving vehicles and LRTs between Friday and Sunday, one of which was fatal.
Brian Whitelaw with Calgary Transit spoke Monday encouraging drivers to keep their own safety in mind while on the road.
“That train cannot stop, and it’s going to do, as we’ve seen, pretty significant damage to the motor vehicle and the occupants,” Whitelaw said at an 11 a.m. news conference.
“When those crossing arms arm down, they’re down for a reason.”
Four LRT and vehicle collisions in Calgary:
Friday, Dec. 18 (8:25 a.m.) A man driving an SUV slid into a CTrain at 9 Street and 4 Avenue S.W. His pregnant wife was in the vehicle with him. He was charged with failing to obey traffic signals.
Friday, Dec. 18 (12:10 p.m.) A vehicle slid into a CTrain near the Somerset-Bridlewood CTrain station. Driver was charged with failing to obey traffic signals.
Saturday, Dec. 19 (4:20 p.m.) A 73-year-old man was killed and his 71-year-old female passenger suffered life-threatening injuries in a collision with a CTrain at 36 Street and 12 Avenue N.E.
Sunday, Dec. 20 (evening) A driver allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of 7 Avenue and 6 Street S.W., hitting a CTrain. Driver was charged with failing to obey traffic signals.
