Banff to get more affordable housing thanks to federal government

BANFF, Alta. – The Justin Trudeau government announced Thursday that it would release federal land to the Town of Banff for the creation of affordable housing.

The land, including six lots on Cave Avenue and six lots on Deer Street, will be leased to the Banff Housing Corporation, which will create multi-unit rental housing, pending the approval of the Town of Banff council.

“We recognize the long-term sustainability and vitality of the community in Banff National Park is dependent on access to affordable housing,” said Catherine McKenna, the minister of the environment and climate change, in a news release.

“We hope that the release of these federal lands to the Town of Banff will improve the housing situation for those who live and work in Banff National Park.”

“The deficiency of appropriate housing impacts our social and economic wellbeing and hinders our ability to provide the necessary services to the park visitor,” added Banff Mayor Karen Sorensen.
