CALGARY – Outdoor enthusiasts are able to try out the up-and-coming sport of fat biking in Canmore this winter.

The activity sees mountain bikes fitted with wide “fat” tires designed for riding on packed snow and ice.

This winter, the Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park has designated single-track trails for the sport, which is growing in popularity.

“Alberta Parks’ planners and facility operators have watched the sport of fat biking grow exponentially for the past several years,” said the province in a news release. “Parks’ engagement with the fat-biking community in the Kananaskis region resulted in the designation of separate trails that will not conflict with users of groomed cross-country ski trails.”

“The fat-biking winter trails option is a great example of how our parks system is responsive to emerging recreation groups and supports multi-use activities,” said Minister of Environment and Parks Shannon Phillips.
