HALIFAX – Richard Butts, Chief Administration Officer for Halifax, has resigned his post, according to a release from the city.
The release says Butts is, “leaving to pursue a new career opportunity.”

In a separate release from Clatyton Developments, the company announced Butts will join the organization as President.
“We are very pleased to welcome Richard to Clayton Developments,” said Dean Robertson, President and Chief Executive Officer of parent company The Shaw Group Limited, “his collaborative approach, drive and integrity are a great fit for the future success of Clayton Developments.”
Butts will stay with the city until Jan. 8 in a transitional role. During that time, Municipal Solicitor John Traves, Q.C. will take on his responsibilities.
“I am disappointed to see Richard leave,” said Mayor Mike Savage in the release, “he’s one of the best city managers in the country.”
Butts created a “competent” senior management team that Mayor Savage says will continue business planning and budget preparations for the coming year.
Regional Council will on the next steps for the CAO position in the new year.
