WOODSTOCK, N.B. – Four RCMP members from the Woodstock area are currently suspended as they wait for the outcome of an internal Code of Conduct investigation.

The investigation comes after information suggesting the members engaged in “discreditable conduct.” Three were suspended in November, one was suspended Tuesday.

The Major Crime Unit of the RCMP has been brought in to rule out criminality in the alleged incident.

The  Kennebecasis Police Force will be independently overseeing the investigation.

“The conduct of members of the RCMP is rightfully held to a higher standard,” said Assistant Commissioner Roger Brown, Commanding Officer of the RCMP in New Brunswick in a statement.

“These suspensions are troubling but I can assure the public we are taking these matters very seriously.”

Late Tuesday, in an interview with reporters, Brown clarified what discreditable conduct didn’t include.

“It’s not drugs. But discreditable conduct could be, and I don’t want to go down to specifics but I’ll tell you this – It’s nothing the public has to worry about that it falls into an area where there’s a public safety issue or danger,” he said.

Discreditable conduct covers a wide range of behaviours.

Under the Code of Conduct of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, members are required to conduct themselves in such a way as to not discredit the force.

The members are currently suspended with pay, but suspension without pay is being pursued in some of the cases.
