Vital road improvements in West Lethbridge have been advanced by more than 5 years. Global News

LETHBRIDGE – Residents of west Lethbridge are one step closer to twinning Whoop Up Drive, as City Council awards over $600,000 to a design team to start working on the drawings.

The project was granted to Stantec Consulting for just over $600,000 was approved by council on Monday. It will include a detailed design of a four-lane divided road on Whoop Up Drive, from Jerry Potts Boulevard and McMaster Boulevard to 30 Street near Copperwood.

Initially construction for the project was set to start in 2022, but there had been public pressure to get it done sooner, as some residents complained about traffic congestion getting worse. Now by completing the design work early, council will have the option of advancing the timeline should the financial resources come available.

“By having the design work done, we know what the cost will be for the final project,” Mayor Chris Spearman said. “That will put us in a place where we can evaluate, looking for new funds and finding efficiencies, getting the work done sooner than anticipated.”

The twinning of the roadway will increase transit capacity, allowing for growth in the Crossings and Copperwood communities. It will also help accommodate traffic flow anticipated from the construction of the Crossings Leisure Complex, a new elementary school and the Crossings commercial development.
