Police dog hurt during Alberta RCMP chase; teen faces 43 charges

EDMONTON – For the second time in just over a month, a 17-year-old was arrested by Wetaskiwin RCMP and is now facing 43 new charges.

Officers were first called after a Cadillac SUV was stolen from a Wetaskiwin FasGas location on Nov. 19. Then, it was reported that an identical Cadillac SUV was involved in theft of fuel from an Esso station. Later, a Cadillac SUV was seen driving through a fence near Garden Meadows.

The RCMP found the stolen vehicle near 53 Street and 47 Avenue and saw the suspect running away.

A Police Service Dog Unit was called out to help and caught the suspect. However, during the chase, Fantom, the two-and-a-half year-old police dog collided with a vehicle and suffered minor injuries. The RCMP said he’s expected to make a full recovery.

When the 17-year-old was arrested, he had 37 warrants related to the theft of two other vehicles and numerous breaches of court orders.

For the latest incident, he’s facing 43 new charges, including theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, theft under $5,000, and operating a vehicle without a licence.

In total, he’s facing 68 charges.

The teenager did not speak to bail and remains in custody. He cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

His next court appearance will be in December.
