Read Saskatoon has been honoured with a prestigious award from the provincial government. The Council of the Federation literacy award recognizes groups that make outstanding strides to improve literacy in Saskatchewan.
For more than 35 years, Read Saskatoon has been offering a variety of programs tailored to encourage literacy development in people of all ages.
The group does this as part of their focus on life-long learning.

“Literacy is everyone’s business,” said Sheryl Harrow-Yurach, the executive director of Read Saskatoon.
“It impacts families, it impacts individuals, how much they earn, how much they save, how they’re role models for their children.”

Erin Kuan, who is the board chair for the organization, said having strong literary skills is a foundation for “economic, social, educational and, employment success.”
“Even more significant, strong literacy skills are foundational to a family’s success. A child’s first teacher is their parent. Their home is the first classroom, and the community is their first school,” said Kuan.
The Council of the Federation literacy award was established in 2004 to recognize groups and individuals for outstanding contributions made to improving literacy in the province.
