NEAR LAKEVILLE CORNER, N.B. – The body of 22-year-old Mitchell Veenhuis, who’s been missing for two weeks, was discovered in his car after it was retrieved from a lake.
RCMP Cst. Isabelle Beaulieu confirmed it was Veenhuis shortly after 6:00 p.m. and said an autopsy will be done.
It comes after a call that Veenhuis’ car had been discovered in a lake near Lakeville Corner, just off of Sand Point Road. RCMP, family and friends arrived shortly after and remained on scene throughout the day.
Divers arrived mid-afternoon, and the car was towed to the lake’s edge at around 4:30 p.m. Shortly after, the coroner arrived.
Veenhuis was last seen on Oct. 14, when he left his Route 690 home near Lakeville Corner.
He was reported missing on Oct. 15 when he didn’t show up for work. Hundreds of family and friends had been scouring the Minto area over the past two weeks.
In an earlier interview with Global News, Veenhuis’ mother, Stacey Heagney said it was completely out of character for him to not contact her.
“Mitchell is an extremely smart boy. Very smart. He has a good job, very soft-hearted. He loved people, kids, animals. He had great friends, lot of family support. It’s just totally out of character,” she said.
