‘The Battle of Alberta’ documents historic rivalry between Oilers and Flames

EDMONTON — The Battle of Alberta.

When you’re talking hockey, not much more needs to be said, especially when you’re talking Oilers and Flames in the 80s and early 90s.

Local sports writer Mark Spector has documented the historic rivalry in his new book, aptly called “The Battle of Alberta.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Spector spins many a yarn in the book, where reaction has been “there hasn’t been a book written on this rivalry before?”

Spector notes, “there’s a statute of limitations that has kinda run out.”

One chapter focuses on two nights in early January 1990 where tough guys Dave Brown and Stu Grimson dropped the gloves in back-to-back games.

Spector tells the story of Eskimos equipment manager Dwayne Mandrusiak helping Oilers equipment boss Barry Stafford with a few techniques (possibly illegal) to help out Brown.

“I didn’t know that then, and learned it now, and it kind of made sense.”

Spector is holding a book launch at Audreys Books in Edmonton on Saturday at 2 p.m.
