It’s unclear what may have prompted the searches, or whether it’s part of routine procedures. Correctional Services of Canada said in a press release  the searches were ordered “to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates.”

Visits are suspended while the searches are completed.

CSC said it works in cooperation with police to “take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correction institutions.”

A request for more information from CSC was not immediately answered Monday afternoon.
