Calgary’s Allison Lockhart shows what made her Canada’s strongest woman

CALGARY – When you think of female strength competitions, powerlifting or body building come to mind, but there’s another event called strongwoman, and the best in Canada just happens to live and train in Calgary.

Allison Lockhart trains at Smash Conditioning in Calgary, and recently won the strongwoman competition over 180 lbs.

Lockhart grew up as a competitive swimmer and also competed in gymnastics, track and field, basketball and even skeleton. Five years ago she discovered how much she enjoyed powerlifting, and in the past two years became the best in Canada in strongwoman, which combines four different power events.

Lockhart is also a national account manager at a risk mitigation company, and when asked what her coworkers think of her title as Canada’s strongest woman, she said: “It’s usually a positive reaction, I haven’t had any negativity about it at all. People just think it’s cool and they want to learn more about it.”

In March she will travel to the Arnold Classic in Ohio to compete in her first strongwoman competition outside of Canada.

Lockhart said she hopes more women discover the sport of strongwoman.

“We still need more people, it’s definitely something people should try out, give it a shot. It’s really empowering, feels good especially as a female to be able to lift more than many men can,” she said, as someone who can deadlift almost 500 llbs.

“It feels cool.”
