Heavy fog a contributing factor in Saskatchewan crashes

Mounties stress the importance of driving for conditions after heavy fog considered a factor in five Saskatchewan crashes. Calvin To / Global News

Heavy fog is a contributing factor in a least five crashes in Saskatchewan Thursday morning and police are stressing the importance of drivers slowing down in less than ideal conditions. Of concern for Mounties were motorists driving too fast for the conditions.

Officers reported hearing squealing tires from vehicles having to stop abruptly to avoid hitting emergency vehicles. They said the vehicles were travelling at speeds well above highway limits in the near zero visibility conditions.

In one instance, a firefighter was clipped by a vehicle at a crash on Highway 16 near Clavet, but was not injured.

The first crash happened around 6 a.m. local time on Highway 15 just east of Outlook when an eastbound car hit a westbound truck hauling a trailer.

The driver of the car was taken to a hospital in Outlook and then to a Regina hospital with unknown injuries.

Then at 6:15 a.m. CT, first responders were called to a crash on Highway 16 near Clavet. A westbound car crossed the centre line and collided with a semi.

The driver of the car was taken to a Saskatoon hospital with unknown injuries.

The third call came in 22 minutes later for a crash between a van and a semi on Highway 11 about five kilometres south of Warman. Mounties say the northbound semi was attempting to turn off the highway when it struck the southbound van.

The driver of the van was taken to a Saskatoon hospital as a precaution.

Then at 8:45 a.m. CT, Mounties were called to another crash on Highway 11, this one at Duck Lake where a southbound van rear-ended a semi. The driver of the van was taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.

A third crash then took place on Highway 11 about an hour later, this one just north of Warman. Police say a grain truck had turned onto the highway when it was rear-ended by a pickup truck.

Both drivers received minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
