EMSB and Lester B. Pearson teachers vote to strike

PIERREFONDS-ROXBORO – Hundreds of Lester B. Pearson School Board (LBPSB) teachers have decided to walk off the job for six days in the coming months.

With 80 per cent of the vote, teachers at LBPSB agreed to a strike mandate Thursday.

Lasalle teacher Alisha Tathgur said it is a necessary move against millions of dollars in government cuts.

“It affects our classroom sizes and as a whole affects the education system in a really negative way,” she told Global News.

English Montreal School Board (EMSB) teachers came to same conclusion.

Teachers voted with 76.5 per cent to join teachers across the province to protest the Liberal government’s austerity measures.

The provincial cuts will mean fewer services for special needs students and larger class sizes.

“I find it rich that elected officials are asking the public service to make sacrifices, while giving themselves such a large raise,” Montreal Teachers’ Association president, Peter Sutherland, told Global News after the Thursday night vote.

Parents will get one week notice ahead of every strike day and the walk outs will only happen after the federal election on October 19.

School board strike vote dates to come:

Vanier College: Sept. 25

Dawson College: Sept. 28-29
