Fatal collision near Whitecourt kills 2 men from Mayerthorpe area

EDMONTON – Two men were killed and a woman was rushed to hospital when their car slammed into the back of a semi early Thursday morning on a highway northwest of Edmonton. All three people were from near Mayerthorpe.

RCMP said crash happened about two kilometers east of Whitecourt on Highway 43. A car driving west rear-ended a semi around 12:45 a.m.

The 36-year-old driver and his 42-year-old passenger died on scene. A seriously injured 36-year-old female passenger was airlifted to hospital in Edmonton. The driver of the semi was not hurt.

Whitecourt detachment Cpl. Dean Purcka said the cause of the crash remains under investigation, but added the weather was clear at the time of the crash.

Purcka said they are still determining if the semi truck was in motion at the time of the collision. Police believe speed is a factor, but are investigating to see if anything else factored into the collision.

Traffic along Highway 43 was diverted for several hours while Mounties investigated. No further details were released because police were still in the process of notifying family members.
