MONTREAL – The Lachine Canal is closed to boaters for the seventh time this summer.

Heavy rainfall led to sewage overflows into the water, forcing Parks Canada to immediately close the canal.

The policy is to shut down the waterway for 72 hours.

“They would prefer it’s someone else’s problem. They do a very good job of telling us when it’s closed but not in helping us resolve the issue,” said Matt Smith.

“They have a blanket statement which is 72 hours the canal is closed whether there’s one litre of water that has overflowed or a bigger volume.”
