Lachine Canal closed after heavy rainfall

ABOVE WATCH: Parks Canada had closed the Lachine Canal, citing “mixed water discharge” due to the heavy rain over the last few days. Global’s Tim Sargeant reports.

MONTREAL – The Lachine Canal has been closed for small boating activity.

Parks Canada is blaming “mixed water discharge” due to the heavy rain over the last few days.

The backed-up storm drains mixed rainwater and sewage and sent it into the canal.

For now, all canoeing, kayaking, dragon boat racing is prohibited; motorized boats are fine.

“Please note that swimming in the canal is forbidden at all times and that a permit is required to navigate in the channel,” wrote Parks Canada in a public security notice.

The closure was originally put in place Monday with the expectation that the canal would re-open 72 hours later on Wednesday, but heavy rainfalls on Tuesday forced Parks Canada to extend it as “public health must be prioritized.”

The canal is expected to reopen for activities Friday at 5:50 p.m.
