Pedestrian hit and killed in southeast Calgary intersection

WATCH ABOVE: A pedestrian died after being hit by an SUV along 130 Avenue S.E. on Thursday evening. Sarah Offin reports.

CALGARY – A man in his early 60s was hit and killed near the community of Mackenzie Towne on Thursday.

Police were called to the intersection of 130 Avenue S.E. and 48 Street S.E., by the South Trail Crossing shopping Centre, just after 11 p.m.

Investigators say the victim was crossing the road when he was struck by a westbound Toyota Rav 4. He was rushed to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition but succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the Rav 4 was uninjured.

Alcohol has been ruled out as a possible factor, but police are investigating if visibility may have played a role in the crash as it was raining heavily and a number of street lights in the area were out.

In addition, the victim was wearing dark clothing.

At the time of the incident, traffic lights at the intersection were flashing yellow for cars travelling along 130 Avenue and flashing red for cars travelling along 48 Street.

Because of this, police say if a someone were to press the crosswalk button it wouldn’t have any impact on the lights. As such, it’s up to pedestrians to make sure it’s safe before crossing.

Officers say the driver was shaken by the incident, and hasn’t seen the pedestrian before he hit him.

It’s not expected charges will be laid.

Any witnesses who have not already spoken to police are asked to contact the Calgary Police Service Traffic Section at 403-567-4000.
