Saskatchewan Huskies football team expects big things from Chow

Watch above: Running back Tyler Chow showed flashes of brilliance in his freshman campaign but now with a full season with the Saskatchewan Huskies under his belt, he’s looking to turn heads in 2015. Jack Haskins reports.

SASKATOON – Towards the end of last season, Tyler Chow emerged as the feature running back for the Saskatchewan Huskies. He showed flashes of brilliance in his freshman campaign but now he’s looking to turn heads in 2015.

The Canada West semifinal against the University of Manitoba Bisons was a major highlight for him as he racked up 178 yards and two touchdowns.

Chow proved last season that he has the skill to play in the CIS.

“He’s just a great natural zone runner. He’s got powerful legs but I think that Tyler’s major asset is his vision … and he makes the right decision most of the time,” said Huskies head coach Brian Towriss.

What could make the sophomore more dangerous to opposing teams on the football field this season is his better understanding of the game.

“He’s just a little bit more comfortable in terms of protection techniques and being in the right place with all of our structure … we haven’t involved him much in the routes yet but that will come, we’re only three, four days in but we’re looking for big things out of him,” said Towriss.

“Veterans do a really good job of bringing up the rookies and putting them through this program, so it really helps,” said Chow.

Typically, when athletes are asked about their off-season preparation the response is almost always positive. But Chow says his training went “OK.”

“I think everything you do, you can always do better. I mean, no matter how hard you train there’s always something that you could have done better,” said Chow.

This combination of skill and relentless work ethic could be a recipe for success in his sophomore season.

The Huskies hit the field this Friday at Griffiths Stadium for a non-conference game against the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks. Kick-off for Global Saskatoon game day is 7 p.m.
