Saskatchewan Huskies QB ready for his fourth year

SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies football team opened up training camp bright and early Saturday morning by holding their first practice of the 2015 season. The team has a plethora of weapons at their disposal on offence including starting quarterback Drew Burko.

The fourth-year field general has progressed every season and in 2015 he is ready to take the Canada West conference by storm.

Last year, Burko exploded for 21 passing touchdowns, finishing second in the country in that category.

But the humble athlete is quick to point out that his teammates deserve most of the credit for his accomplishments.

“Well it speaks a lot with our receiving core. I mean, when you have all five positions where you can get the ball to any one of them and they’re going to make plays, it really helps me out,” said Burko.

Even though Burko had a monster year in 2014, the veteran QB has several things he wants to brush up on this year.

“I just want to complete more passes, I think my completion percentage was about 60 per cent last year. I want to get that up higher just so we have the ball in our receivers’ hands more,” he explained.

Burko had a regular season that virtually any quarterback in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) would have envied in 2014. However, the playoffs were a different story.

Saskatchewan blew a 19 point second half lead against the University of Manitoba Bisons ending what was looking to be a promising 2014 season for the Huskies.

“I don’t really think about it too much. I mean, it was a long time ago, there’s nothing we can do now about it, so we just start a new season and try to do what we can do,” said Burko.

The Huskies host a non-conference game against the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks on Aug. 21 at Saskatoon’s Griffiths Stadium.
