Huskies receiver John Trumpy looking to elevate his game

Watch above: Now with a full season with the Saskatchewan Huskies football team under his belt, the relentless John Trumpy is looking to elevate his game to the next level. Jack Haskins reports.

SASKATOON – John Trumpy was one of the breakout stars for the Saskatchewan Huskies football team in 2014. When he came to the team from the CJFLs Saskatoon Hilltops, his goal was to simply make the travelling roster.

Trumpy was on the Huskies radar long before they recruited him in 2014.

“Well we go back all the way to high school with ‘Trumps’, I mean, we knew that he was just a hard-working kid and he loved to play the game and we saw that when he was an 18 or 17 year old and he just got better and better,” said Huskies head coach Brian Towriss.

He didn’t waste any time making a name for himself in the CIS.

“In the first game, I got a touchdown with a catch and from there I just wanted more … that first game was a confidence boost for me,” said Trumpy.

Trumpy went on to lead the Huskies in receiving yards and in touchdown receptions in 2014. He also earned the reputation of a hard worker who is fearless on the field.

“You got to tell Trumps to sit down because otherwise he’ll just run himself into the ground, you admire that. You also have to tell him to be smart with it and save yourself for game day,” said Towriss.

Now with a full season under his belt, the relentless Trumpy is looking to elevate his game to the next level.

Some players will try to forget the Huskies crushing defeat against the University of Manitoba (U of M) Bisons in the Canada West semifinal last fall.

But not Trumpy. He says that loss was the most crushing defeat he’s ever been a part of and he plans on using those painful memories as motivation.

“As soon as the schedule came out, day one, who’s coming back here, U of M and we’ve had that marked on our calendars for a long time, we’re going to see them here and we’re going to be fired up and ready to go 100 per cent,” said Trumpy.
