After three days, the lights are back on in Beaverdell

BEAVERDELL – It has been a trying few days in the small community of Beaverdell east of Kelowna.

It lost electricity Thursday night after the Rock Creek wildfire destroyed power poles and lines along Highway 33.

“Not having power we can handle,” says Beaverdell resident Tracie Sardinha. “It was not having phones or any communications. My family was hearing we were being evacuated. I had family in panic. It wasn’t fun.”

The Salvation Army from Kelowna has been providing residents with two hot meals a day. And Costco has provided free drinking water.

FortisBC brought in a large, mobile generator to restore power to Beaverdell Sunday night.

But crews can’t make permanent repairs to the electrical infrastructure until fire damaged danger trees near the power lines are removed.

That work began Monday. The power line repairs won’t be completed until next week.
