CALGARY – A black bear cub had to be put down after its mother was struck by a vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway earlier this month.

Parks Canada says the female black bear and one of her cubs were hit and killed near the Skunk Cabbage trail in Mount Revelstoke National Park on August 5.

The incident left behind one surviving cub that had to be put down, as it was only two months old and likely wouldn’t survive on its own according to officials at Parks Canada.

“Our staff followed standard protocol and took the humane action,” said Public Relations and Communications Officer Jacolyn Daniluck.

“It is always sad when this happens,” she added. “Parks Canada works hard to protect wildlife inside the national parks but a certain amount of wildlife mortality along transportation corridors is unavoidable.
