Attempted Calgary bank robbery leads to helicopter chase, car crash

WATCH ABOVE: A dramatic scene unfolded in Calgary Tuesday afternoon, after an attempted bank robbery ended in a car crash. Global’s Tracy Nagai reports.

CALGARY – An attempted bank robbery in the city’s southwest ended in a car crash on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said a call came in at 3:34 p.m. after a lone man entered the ATB Financial bank in the 900 block of 85 St. S.W. He had a note demanding cash, and then left the bank.

Police said the man got into a car driven by a woman and drove away at a high rate of speed.

A HAWC helicopter followed the car, which ended up crashing into another vehicle near the intersection of Sarcee Trail and 17 Avenue S.W.

While the man and woman tried to flee on foot after the crash, they are now in police custody.

EMS was on scene treating minor injuries.

The bank has been locked down and the investigation is ongoing.
